Reading the Body’s Symbolic Language

The body keeps the score – and it also speaks in symbol.

It is now widely accepted that the body keeps the score – that stress and trauma are stored physically, not just remembered mentally. Less discussed is that the body does not only store; it also speaks, and it speaks in symbol.

Sensation as sentence

A tightness in the throat before you say the true thing. A weight on the chest that arrives with a particular name. Shoulders that carry what has not been set down. These are not merely mechanical. They are the body rendering an emotional truth in physical language, precisely because the truth has not yet been allowed anywhere else.

The body will say, in sensation, what has not yet been safe to say in words.

Where symbol meets science

This is not mysticism against medicine. The nervous system, the breath and the felt sense are measurable and physical – and they are also symbolic. Holding both at once, without collapsing one into the other, is the heart of an evidence-honest approach to the body.

Listening as practice

Learning to read the body is a skill that can be trained. It begins with slowing down enough to notice sensation before rushing to interpret or fix it – letting the body finish its sentence before you answer.
